BUBBLES (I refer to the bathroom- the one that I will be filling with bubbles)
So although there is no humanly way that this will compare to HK's project, here's my deal:
the bubble soap
Many believe there is a universal truth waiting out there for someone to discover, or perhaps, for no one to ever know. All bubbles come from this soap. This is the most ambiguous aspect of my project, because it really has the most to do with your personal beliefs. In class, we discussed that for a truth to be universal, it must be collectively agreed upon- something I'm not sure we ever will. REGARDLESS the soap represents a universal or original "master truth".
the bubble wand
Our minds tap into the "soap of truth" and are able to conceptualize the idea of "truths". It is of my personal belief that one universal truth cannot be found, as (hypothetically speaking) we do not directly touch the bubble soap, but rather use the wand. We can acknowledge smaller, or individual truths (the bubbles) in two ways: reason and perception.
plato would argue that we can only know such things through reason. that ideas first exist in the mind, and that the "bubbles" of truth are already inside of us.
aristotle on the other hand, would say that we must first perceive things to learn the truth about them. in order to know that a bubble is even there, we first must see it. We can then reach out to it, attempting to catch it.
take a minute to think about which method you lean towards...
I lean towards aristotle's method, although my favorite is KANT. I feel that I use my reason as a tool to learn about what I first perceive, and in this way, bubbles represent the truth to me. here's why:
the bubbles
Basically, the bubbles are the truth.
There is never just one- all truths are different in shape and size> no two are the same. If you are in the bathroom alone, you may be the only one to perceive these truths. If you are accompanied, you may be sharing the experience with someone else, but notice that neither one of you will see these bubbles in the exact same way.
You can't touch them! Bubbles pop immediately the second you can finally reach them. They seem to be "intangible", much like the truth. We can search for them and come closer and closer, but when push comes to shove, you can never touch the truth. I feel that our personal truths will forever be changing and popping, newly emerging bubbles.
